Nutrition Programs for Families

Read the video transcript

In Palm Beach County, Extension Family and Consumer Science agents provide two nutrition programs for the local community. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program has been available in the county for at least twenty years, and the Family Nutrition Program (FNP) has existed for ten to twelve years.

Although the primary audience of FNP consists of people eligible for or already receiving food stamp benefits, both programs focus on healthy nutrition practices, food management, and food safety.

The programs are designed for children and adults and include hands-on, interactive learning, such as preparing a healthy snack or a healthy meal. Participants are encouraged to practice what they've learned before the next lesson.

Participants have credited the programs with helping them save money and make better food choices, such as reducing fat and sodium in their diets and paying attention to food safety guidelines. Children learn that they can choose healthy drinks--such as milk, juice, or water--instead of sodas. By learning how to make healthy choices, children are establishing good eating habits for life.

Martin County's Think Nutrition During the Hurricane Program teaches families how to get the proper nutrition during and after storms. When supplies are scarce, it can be difficult to eat healthy, but it is possible to plan nutritious meals that require little preparation.
